Accomplishments - Boronia Site

The commercial and manufacturing site of GSK Australia is based in Boronia, Victoria. This site has implemented a range of green projects and initiatives to help GSK reduce its environmental impact, both locally and internationally.

GSK Australia’s Boronia site has received a number of awards in GSK’s global ‘CEO Environment Health and Safety Excellence Awards’:

  • 2007: 3rd Prize for “Sustainable Water Management”
  • 2008: 1st Prize for “Building Trust Through Environmental Commitment”
Water Consumption

18% reduction in mains water consumption in 2008. This is a saving of over 10,000,000 litres of water.
Examples of key projects that have delivered these improvements have included: 

 

  • Stormwater harvesting and re-use on site
  • Use of recycled water from production processes
Waste to Landfill

28% reduction in waste sent to landfill in 2008. This is more than 100 tonne reduction in landfill waste.

Examples of key projects that have delivered these improvements include:

 

  • Improved site waste recycling program
  • Reducing consumption of office paper

Energy Consumption

9% reduction in energy usage in 2008. This is a reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 2600 tonnes.

 

Examples of key projects that have delivered these improvements have included:

 

  • Tuning and optimisation of site air conditioning systems;
  • Changing employee behaviours through “Turn Off” campaign;
  • Improving the energy efficiency of site utility systems - For example, boiler and steam delivery systems; and, 
  • Upgrading lighting systems.
