Warrnambool to Port Fairy Rail TrailAt GSK Australia, we’ve noticed that healthy living and a healthy environment go hand in hand, which is why we recently donated $10,000 to the development of the Warrnambool to Port Fairy rail trail project to encourage employees to combine their physical exercise with commuting to work. Still in development, the rail trail will span 30km in total, following a disused rail corridor between Port Fairy, Koroit and Illowa, before finishing at Warrnambool. Development of the rail trail began in February 2008 with the first 1500 metre section in Port Fairy already complete. This section runs through the GSKA Port Fairy production plant, which sparked GSKA’s initial involvement in the project.“We are proud to contribute to the establishment of the Port Fairy rail trail through our Community Partnerships Program. We see this project as being of benefit not only to our own employees, but also to the local community as a whole,” said Derby Lee, Production Manager at Port Fairy. There are approximately 120 GSKA employees based at the Port Fairy production site, and for those living in the local area the rail trail will provide an excellent opportunity to ride, walk or run to work. Making the rail trail accessible to employees who reside in Port Fairy will significantly reduce GSKA's carbon emissions, which would have otherwise been exerted through motorised transport. In addition to this, other community members who work within the connecting townships of the rail trail will have the opportunity to leave their cars at home. The rail trail project is due for completion at the end of 2009. For up to date progress, and to find out when you’ll be able to leave the car at home, visit the Moyne Shire Council website to download The Rail Trail Express quarterly newsletter. |
