GSK heritage companies have operated in Australia since 1886.

 

 

1924

 

 

Australian branch of Wellcome Foundation registered as Burroughs Wellcome & Company (Australia), establishing a research-based industry in Australia.

 

 

1961

 

 

Glaxo Boronia facility founded and expanded in various stages over the next four decades.

 

 

1964

 

 

Poppy growing project starts in Tasmania and develops into one of Australia’s greatest agricultural and manufacturing success stories.

 

 

1980

 

 

Wellcome Australia Medal, now the GlaxoSmithKline Award for Research Excellence is presented for the first time.

 

 

1989

 

 

Merger between Beecham Laboratories and Smith, Kline & French to form SmithKline Beecham.

 

 

1995

 

 

Merger between Glaxo and Burroughs Wellcome to form Glaxo Wellcome.

 

 

2000

 

 

Merger between Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham to form GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

 

 

2003

 

 

New ‘Australasia’ region formed, consisting of GSK Australia and New Zealand.

 

 

2005

 

 

Paul Lirette commences as Area Director Australasia & General Manager Australia.
