29 Dec 2004 - GSK Response to Humanitarian Disaster in Asia

Following the humanitarian disaster unfolding as a result of the earthquake and tidal waves in Asia on 26 December, GSK will be providing medicines through international humanitarian relief agencies. GSK has a tried and tested process where supplies of our antibiotics are already in the warehouses of our non-profit partners so they can get them to the disaster situations quickly. These donated medicines will be able to be airlifted in to provide humanitarian relief as soon as the needs are clear.

We are working with the disaster response agencies now to find out exactly what is required and because of the above process, GSK medicines will reach the needy as soon as possible. GSK's corporate efforts will be supplemented by activities in the local operating companies, for example both GSK India and GSK Sri Lanka have already been in contact with local NGOs or health departments to supply medicines.

GSK Australia has been in contact with OPAL Australia* to offer support in the provision of much needed medicines. We have offered to supply medicines through OPAL and in conjunction with Medicines Australia to contribute to the international aid effort.

*Overseas Pharmaceutical Aid for Life (OPAL) is the organisation through which GSK makes donations of medicines for use in aid and humanitarian work outside Australia
