Vaccination is widely recognised as the only measure likely to have significant impact on reducing severe rotavirus gastroenteritis.

Almost all children will have been infected at least once with rotavirus by 5 years of age, with the peak incidence of rotavirus gastroenteritis occurring in children 6 months to 2 years of age.

Each year in Australia rotavirus gastroenteritis causes up to 10,000 children to be admitted to hospital, with thousands more having to seek treatment from an emergency department or GP.
